Join artist and MCLA art professor Melanie Mowinski for a hands-on bookmaking workshop that blends play, experimentation, and simple structure.
Together we’ll explore what happens when randomness gets woven into a book structure through the creation of a small, stitched pamphlet booklet with a pocket—a humble form that leaves plenty of room for surprise.
You’ll begin by choosing from a selection of unusual, found, and everyday types of paper to build your booklet. Each participant will stitch their pages together by hand and create a pocket to hold a one-of-a-kind bookmark made from random yarn, fabric, or other materials. While everyone will follow the same basic format, the combinations of papers, stitches, and textures will make each book entirely unique.
All materials will be provided; no experience is necessary. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to experiment!
