Program Description

Event Details

Experience the excitement of discovering new things and deepen your connection to the natural world by taking up a new hobby: birding! This indoor-outdoor workshop hosted by Mass Audubon will share ideas and inspiration, tips to start enjoying birds in your own way, and give you a chance to practice fundamental birding skills that will help you find more birds during your next outdoor adventure. The first half of the workshop will be indoors with a multimedia presentation and Q&A. You'll learn why 1 in 5 Americans consider themselves birders, general approaches to identifying a bird's species, how to make sense of common bird behaviors, and more. The remaining time will be spent outside looking for birds and practicing binocular skills. A limited number of high-quality binoculars will be available to borrow, as well as an assortment of bird guides for you to try.

Presenter Nicaela Haig is a teacher-naturalist based out of Mass Audubon's Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Lenox, where she facilitates a wide variety of natural history programs for adults and families. She has been birding for almost 25 years, and loves showing people how adaptable and fun the hobby of birding can be.

This event is one of numerous Flight Path programs, an initiative the library is participating in through the Spring.  Be on the look out for more programs about birding, bird conservation and migration, and bird-related films and craft workshops!
